Dear George:

Throughout its history, the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) has attempted to address health data issues of importance to states and localities while staying focused on the national agenda. To the extent that the Committee has succeeded in this effort over the past ten years, you can take much of the credit. During that time you have effectively brought the state and public health perspectives to the Committee’s deliberations.

Your vast experience as Director of the Michigan State Center for Health Statistics and State Registrar, as well your leadership role in state health data organizations, positioned you well for this role. I especially want to thank you for your service as Chair of the Subcommittee on State and Community Health Statistics and as a member of the Executive Subcommittee. During the Committee’s June 16-17, 1998 meeting, the members also asked that I convey their appreciation for your many contributions.

The Committee joins me in wishing you well in all your future endeavors. We hope we can still call upon you from time to time for advice and consultation. You are a wonderful person as well as seasoned expert and we will miss having you at our table. If we can ever do anything for you, please call upon us. And if we get off the track with respect to issues relating to states and localities, please help us mend our ways. George, all the best to you and yours.

Sincerely,

Don E. Detmer
Chair
